The team at the Wickaninnish Inn tries to "arrange" at least one storm for every winter guest that comes to the Inn because they know the guests who come to the Inn are not hoping for dry, sunny weather. They want to see the rain, feel the wind and experience a full-blown Pacific Storm while visiting the rugged west coast of Vancouver Island. The Inn is located on the edge of a temperate rain forest, so no matter what time of year, it will probably rain at least once during a visit. Mother Nature offers storms every three to four days in the winter months. Few guests leave disappointed.
Winter storm watchers should come to the West Coast of Vancouver Island anytime from early November through to the end of February. During these blustery winter months it is exciting to watch storms roll in across the ocean. The grey clouds swirl just off shore, then sheets of rain pound down on forest and the Inn, drenching everything within minutes.
Guests can enjoy the storms from any of the guestrooms or suites at the Wickaninnish Inn, because all rooms have a view of the Pacific Ocean. Walking on Chesterman Beach, adjacent to the Inn, is also exhilarating during a storm. The gale force winds feel like they will lift walkers off their feet. Every guestroom is equipped with Helly Hansen rain gear. Rubber boots are also available to properly outfit storm watchers as the head out of the Inn to face the elements. It is best to remember that there really is no bad weather in Tofino, only bad clothing choices. Without a doubt, the ultimate location for storm watching is the Inn's Pointe Restaurant which offers 240 degree panoramic views of the giant waves crashing against the rocks before they surge past the Inn to seek the sand of Chesterman Beach.
The sound of the powerful surf is soothing, whether listening to it while relaxing beside a private fireplace, in a soaker tub with a view of the ocean, or from the Inns' Pointe Restaurant where the delightful sounds of the crashing waves are brought inside through the state of the art sound system.
When it does not blow a gale, guests head out on to the beach under clear, blue skies with the sun warming their faces, without rain gear and wellies, strolling on the hard packed sand, exploring what the last storm has brought ashore.
Daily flights from Vancouver to Tofino are available with Craig Air www.craigair.com.
