We are incredibly lucky here on the West Coast. With an abundance of green forest, fresh air and water and the creatures who call them home, we are surrounded by the brilliance of intact old growth wilderness; it’s something we cannot take for granted.
We depend on the earth and sea for food, culture, recreation and, well, everything when you get into the details, but as a small, remote community, the tie to our environment can feel even more intimate and visceral. It’s why people seek to visit this special place, and why we love to live here!
Being “green” has always come naturally to us at the Wickaninnish Inn. We understand our reliance on the environment comes with the responsibility of stewardship, something we take on wholeheartedly. The Inn has sustainability built into it (quite literally, we have used reclaimed timber in our guestrooms and public spaces!), and, while it’s not always obvious, we have a number of standards and initiatives in place that make being more sustainable “business as usual.” We are defined by our environment and proud to be an Ocean Wise and Ocean-Friendly business and a certified member of a number of eco-programs. Of course, we’re always looking for ways to do more, and that includes additions—such as our new water refill stations (the Vi Tap) by Vivreau—to enable our visitors to make better choices with us.
And, just because we’re serious about our commitments, doesn’t mean we can’t have fun doing it! Participating in community events such as the annual Earth Day MUP Clean Up, Earth Hour and supporting our local Surfrider Chapter with the Sessions Fundraiser is important, and we enjoy cultivating mindful practices alongside our neighbours.
It takes many hands in action to responsibly manage our impact on the environment. Our vision in helping guests connect with Clayoquot Sound, the Esowista Peninsula and the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve includes empowering them to get involved, too. We encourage you to participate in events while you’re here (if you’re curious, just ask!), and perhaps your visit can be a catalyst to a long-lasting commitment back at home.
We’re grateful for your continued enthusiasm and support for doing this work—together we are ensuring our ongoing pursuit of a green and sustainable future for all generations to enjoy!
