As the summer winds down, there's a palpable shift in the air. Back-to-school season has arrived, and with it returns the quieter, more reflective side of Tofino. I’ve always had a soft spot for this time of year. The days are long, the weather is as stunning as ever, and there’s a certain serenity that settles over the town. The energy of summer begins to fade, and we find ourselves called back into a more relaxed rhythm we fondly refer to as ‘Tofino time.’

Tofino time is more than just a slower pace; it’s time to reconnect with the community, venture out to our favourite spots, and appreciate the simple pleasures that make this corner of Vancouver Island so special. I often find myself reminiscing about my own school days during this season, back when the current Town Hall was our three-room schoolhouse, and the theatre was our covered playground. September meant new school supplies, a fresh haircut, and the start of floor hockey season—a sport that brought all of our friends together indoors after a summer spent outdoors.

Whether seeing familiar faces at the Tofino Farmers Market, the local brewery, or gathering for community events such as the Queen of the Peak surf competition at the end of the month, that sense of connection continues today. These shared experiences remind us that the heart of Tofino beats strongest in these quieter moments when locals and guests come together to celebrate our love for this place.

And then there’s the magic of the natural world in September—the long days with clear skies give way to incredible starry nights. Early risers might catch a glimpse of the moon setting and the sun rising simultaneously over Chesterman Beach’s tombolo, a sight that never fails to awe. This is the time of year when the Pacific Ocean’s waves begin to rise, drawing surfers to the shore, while the forests glow with the golden hues of autumn. The migratory shorebirds begin to make their way south, offering birdwatchers a chance to witness this seasonal journey.

As we settle back into Tofino time, I invite you to come and experience this change of pace as the season begins to turn. Whether it’s an early morning stroll along the beach, a peaceful boat tour of Clayoquot Sound, or simply enjoying a meal at one of our many local restaurants, September in Tofino offers a unique opportunity to connect—with the community, with nature, and with yourself. We look forward to welcoming you this autumn to appreciate it firsthand.

Warm regards,

Charles
