Annual Artists in Action Event
Join us in celebrating the local creative spirit during the annual New Year’s Artists in Action Series. From Saturday, December 30 to Monday, January 1, meet three talented regional artists and explore their craft in the Beach Building from 10 am to 4 pm.
Craig Benson | Stone Carving - Craig Benson’s carvings are deeply inspired by his lifelong connection to nature. With a background in wildlife management and habitat protection, his years in awe-inducing North American landscapes shaped his profound appreciation for the creatures and environments he now celebrates in stone. Since turning to full-time sculpting in 1990, Craig has celebrated life's beauty, mystery, and diversity through his stonework, honouring the natural world in every piece. Location: Wickaninnish on the Beach Lobby
Frank Armich | Wood Carving - Vancouver Island-born Frank Armich has been transforming local wood into exquisite art for decades. Starting as an apprentice in his father’s burl wood furniture business, Frank now specializes in fashioning pieces from Old Growth Burl, including salvaged woods such as Yellow Cedar, Red Cedar, Hemlock, and Spruce. His work—ranging from mirrors to mystical trees and one-of-a-kind furniture—captures the beauty and history of the West Coast’s natural materials. Each piece is a testament to his deep connection to the land and the craftsmanship of reclaimed wood. Location: Wickaninnish on the Beach Lookout Library
Alicia La Rue | Acrylic Painting - Residing in Ucluelet, Alicia La Rue has made a name for herself as a versatile artist, working across multiple mediums from digital design to large-scale murals. Alicia’s vibrant acrylic paintings often draw inspiration from the stunning landscapes and wildlife of Vancouver Island. She has collaborated with organizations like the Robert Bateman Foundation and designed art for events across the island. Known for her dynamic use of colour and expression, Alicia’s work has been featured in galleries and art shows worldwide. Location: Wickaninnish on the Beach Henry Nolla Gallery
