Originally from Germany, Johnny Rethmeier’s journey to Tofino was driven by a deep appreciation for nature and a desire to live in a place that would inspire him daily. After his first visit to the West Coast in 2016, Johnny promised himself he would call this place home one day. In 2022, he and his wife drove their campervan, Woody, across Canada from Halifax to the West Coast after converting it into a fully off-grid vehicle in their backyard in Germany. “When we arrived in Tofino, at the end of the road, we decided to stay,” he shares, “and if you look around, it’s not hard to understand why.”

Johnny’s journey at the Wick began in Housekeeping as a Room Attendant. He then became our Community & Culture Coordinator before transitioning into his current position as one of the Inn’s Maintenance Technicians. A true lover of nature, Johnny was drawn to this role for the opportunity to work outdoors and apply his hands-on problem-solving skills. Always kept busy by the elements of the West Coast, Johnny and the Maintenance Team are crucial in preserving the beauty and integrity of the property. He is happiest when he can solve a situation, adding that “the best reward is a happy, smiling face and everyone’s satisfaction.”

Johnny’s passion for craftsmanship and creativity extends beyond his work at the Inn. As a participant in the Salvaged Art Project, a collaboration between local artists and the Ocean Legacy Foundation, Johnny’s work brings attention to the urgent issue of ocean pollution. His piece, The Flood, is a striking 4ft x 8ft ocean scene composed entirely of marine rope and fishing nets, which he used to portray a powerful image of a wave—representing the overwhelming flood of plastic in our oceans—against a serene sunset and distant mountains. “Through this project, I hope to inspire change and raise awareness about the devastating effects of plastic pollution,” Johnny explains.

Whether it’s beachcombing, storm watching, or strolling the coastline and lush forests, Johnny and his wife are always exploring new nooks of the Island. Pettinger Point for sunrise with a coffee and pastry, Schooner Cove, Halfmoon Bay, and South Florencia are a few of his favourite places to recharge. “We have different spots for different occasions, each of them stunning in their own way.”

Johnny’s work is vital to the guest experience, ensuring that the Inn continues to meet its high standards while allowing the raw beauty of the surrounding environment to shine through. “I try to see the property and the Inn through the eyes of a guest,” he explains. “Maintaining a high, world-class standard is key. This place's natural beauty is what we work with and highlight for our guests in every possible way.” Johnny’s approach to his work reflects his creative touch, a deep connection to this place, and his belief that "good things, good people, and small but meaningful gestures" are what truly make a difference in the world.
