Our Tofino Neighbour - Alicia LaRue
Article Information & Social Sharing
Alicia LaRue is a dynamic freelance artist based in Ucluelet, where the stunning natural beauty of the West Coast fuels her creativity. With 16 years of experience spanning various mediums, from digital design to large murals, she embraces a disciplined approach to her craft. Drawn to Vancouver Island by the ocean, Alicia loves the calming energy that comes from being near the water, helping her slow down and center herself.
Living by the ocean profoundly influences Alicia’s artistic themes, particularly her depictions of wildlife and landscapes. “My studio is on my boat, and most mornings, I have my coffee while watching a blue heron do its morning stretches on the wooden post beside me,” she shares. “I also take hikes and feel humbled by the strength and beauty of the water, waves, and sunsets. Living here truly blesses me with constant inspiration.”
While acrylic is currently her main medium, Alicia loves experimenting with different materials like felt and clay mosaic. These lesser-known mediums offer unique textures and creative possibilities, allowing her the freedom to express herself in new ways. This adventurous spirit extends to her plein air painting, setting up her easel in various locations to capture the world around her in real-time. “I especially love storms—I feel the energy of the storm as I paint,” she explains. “When I'm painting during a storm on my boat, it makes me feel freer with my brushstrokes.”

Alicia’s artistic journey has taken her across Vancouver Island, but a standout project was her collaboration with the Robert Bateman Foundation, where she digitized the artist's early sketches for a silk screen apparel line. This opportunity allowed her to connect with an artist she has long admired, further deepening her roots in the local art community. She is currently collaborating with Kay Ceramics in Ucluelet, exploring exciting projects that blend clay and painting.
Alicia has brought her vibrant artistry to the Inn through live painting sessions, where she has the opportunity to connect with guests from around the world. She finds that these interactions enrich her creative practice, adding a unique dimension to her work. As she continues to explore new ideas and challenge herself, her journey as an artist remains deeply rooted in the beauty and energy of the West Coast. With every stroke, Alicia invites us to see the world through her eyes, and we eagerly anticipate what she will create next.
