As a global association of hoteliers, restaurateurs, and chefs, Relais & Châteaux has long been a beacon of excellence in hospitality. The Wickaninnish Inn has been a member of the not-for-profit organization since our inception, and we are proud to share that Charles McDiarmid, our Managing Director and Maître de Maison, is one of seven Sustainability Commissioners focused on honing Relais & Châteaux’s sustainability strategy and propelling it forward.

Recently, Relais & Châteaux published its 2023 Sustainability Report, a visually compelling testament to the collective efforts of its properties worldwide. At its core is the Relais & Châteaux Vision—a manifesto of 20 commitments presented to UNESCO in 2014—focused on preserving global culinary diversity, protecting the environment, and empowering communities. Informed by data from 346 properties, including the Wickaninnish Inn, this report underscores the association’s dedication to these guiding principles.

Relais and Chateaux - 3 Pillars
The Sustainability Report builds on this Vision of 20 commitments by focusing on 15 objectives across three pillars

This past year, we saw a notable shift in the global hospitality landscape as Relais & Châteaux members from every corner of the world embraced innovative practices that honour both people and the planet. These efforts are not merely about meeting targets; they are woven into the fabric of daily operations, from sourcing local, organic ingredients to reducing our carbon footprint.

Reflecting on these shared achievements, it’s clear that sustainability is an ongoing journey for all of us rather than a final destination. The report’s emphasis on measuring and transparently reporting progress is vital for holding us accountable and ensuring we each do our part to stay the course. This commitment drives us to continually evolve our own practices at the Wickaninnish Inn, striving to set new benchmarks in hospitality that honour both the natural environment and our guest experience.

As we approach the tenth anniversary of Relais & Châteaux's original pledge to UNESCO, the organization looks forward to unveiling new strategic objectives in 2024 that will further deepen our commitment to sustainability, ensuring that we not only preserve the beauty of our world but enhance it for future generations.

Explore the 2023 Sustainability Report to discover the many facets of Relais & Châteaux’s mission, vision, and the collective efforts driving our commitment to a more sustainable future.
