Since 2014, Relais & Châteaux has embraced a bold vision: to create a better world through cuisine and hospitality. In the face of escalating challenges, including climate change, the rapid decline of biodiversity, and deteriorating ocean health, the Association has committed to transforming hospitality models to align with environmental, social, and economic goals. With one million species at risk of extinction, the stakes are urgent, threatening not only ecosystems but also global food security.
In partnership with UNESCO, Relais & Châteaux is addressing the profound interconnectedness of food, health, and the environment. This collaboration draws on the rich knowledge of UNESCO’s Natural World Heritage sites, Biosphere Reserves, and Global Geoparks, guiding efforts toward sustainable food systems. Creating a roadmap to meaningful change, Relais & Châteaux has recently reaffirmed its dedication to 12 commitments rooted in three core missions: preserving the world’s hospitality and culinary traditions, protecting biodiversity, and fostering a more humane world through daily action.
The Association’s first core mission is the commitment to preserving culinary and hospitality traditions as a celebration of culture, craft, and history. Each property serves as a guardian of local heritage, serving cuisine that reflects the uniqueness of a place and its biodiversity. By championing local farmers, fishermen, and artisans and crafting dining experiences that tell the story of the land and its people, Relais & Châteaux properties foster connections that are meaningful and enduring. This mission also extends beyond preserving the past; it seeks to reimagine these traditions with sustainability at heart.
Recognizing the vital connection between thriving ecosystems and a healthy planet, Relais & Châteaux’s second core mission focuses on protecting and restoring biodiversity. Through collaboration across a network of NGOs, suppliers, scientists, and more, the Association strives to contribute to the regeneration of both marine and land ecosystems. By embracing regenerative agriculture, prioritizing animal welfare, and supporting sustainable, small-scale fishing, properties champion practices that honour the natural world. With ambitious environmental goals for 2040, including reducing carbon emissions, improving resource management, and eliminating single-use plastics, Relais & Châteaux is redefining hospitality as a force for environmental renewal and stewardship.
